How does rights licensing work on Youdji?

On Youdji, the transfer of usage rights defines how a brand can use content created by a UGC creator, for how long, and in what context the content can be distributed. These parameters directly affect the rights granted and the price of the collaboration.

Important: under the Youdji contract, rights are always granted worldwide and across all platforms. You therefore do not need to negotiate these elements. Only the type of distribution and the duration may vary.

The 2 types of content usage

When starting a collaboration, you must define how the content will be distributed. There are two main types.

1. Organic use

Organic use refers to using content without any paid advertising budget. The content is shared through existing channels without paid amplification.

Examples:

  • Posting on the brand’s social media accounts (Instagram, TikTok, etc.)
  • Using the content on a website, in a newsletter, or on a blog
  • Non-sponsored reposting on the creator’s social media accounts

👉 This type of usage is generally included in the creator’s base rate.

After the usage rights expire:
Content that has already been published may remain online. However, it can no longer be reused in new publications.

2. Paid advertising

Paid advertising refers to using the content as part of paid advertising campaigns. This involves media spend to reach a larger or more targeted audience.

Examples:

  • Ads on Meta Ads or TikTok Ads
  • Paid promotion (boosting) of a post
  • Sponsored ads on Google or other platforms

👉 This type of usage requires an advertising license, which is generally charged as an additional fee, as the content is being used on a larger scale.

Duration of usage rights

In addition to the type of distribution, you must define how long the usage rights are granted for.

The usage rights period begins as soon as the content is approved on Youdji. During this period, the brand may use the content in accordance with the agreed terms.

Once this period has ended:

  • The brand may no longer initiate new uses of the content
  • Content that has already been published organically may remain visible
  • Any new use of the content requires the usage rights to be renegotiated

Impact on pricing

Usage rights directly affect the price of a collaboration.

  • Organic use only → standard rate
  • Paid advertising → higher rate
  • Long-term or multiple uses → price adjustment

Best practices

For brands:
Define the following from the outset:

  • The type of distribution (organic, paid advertising, or both)
  • The duration of the usage rights

This provides a clear framework and helps prevent misunderstandings.

For creators:
Adjust your rates based on:

  • The type of usage
  • The duration of the rights granted

Always make sure these terms are clearly defined before approval.
